Women in Poker |

Poker—A Women’s Game Too
A Canadian researcher, Heather Chalmers out of Brock University led a study about why women gamble. Her study concluded that women gamble to socialize, while men gamble to win. But the opinions of actual female players might be different. A top ranking Wales poker player, Debbie Channing argues that the influx in women poker players comes from the fact that, “It’s one of the few games you can compete fairly against a man and come out on top. You get away with a bit more as a woman.” Another study put forth by Red Lounge Casino revealed that 68% of British housewives gamble online. Twelve percent of Yorkshire women, reportedly, actually prefer playing online bingo to having sex!
So the consensus seems to be that a women’s place in gambling, and poker specifically, is somewhat different than that of a man’s. Regardless, many professional poker women have long-surpassed the men they are matched up against at the big-money tables. The Top 10 Female Players, ranked by total lifetime earnings, according to Woman Poker Player Magazine, include Kathy Liebert as number one, and long-time player Annie Duke as number two on the list, both with lifetime winnings totaling more than $3 million. While Duke’s claim to fame was her brother, poker pro Howard Lederer, she has since made a name for herself all on her own.
There are some very interesting female characters that thrive within the poker community. One such being Evelyn NG, who started out as a blackjack dealer at the age of 17 and has been successful in poker ever since. Her “ambidextrous chip tricks” have brought many men to intimidation. Women in poker have played their own role in bringing poker into the global mainstream. Hollywood hottie Jennifer Tilly is also a big-name poker player, who is responsible for generating quite a bit of poker attention within her own fan base.
What is interesting about most women in poker is that they have a story about them, often bringing a bit of excitement in the form of drama to the tables. For example, the recently infamous Tiffany Michelle, who made a reputation for herself with her not-so-lady-like poker etiquette. Then there was Chantel McNulty, the love interest of Dustin Woolf, a.k.a. Neverwin, who shook things up quite a bit over a $50K loss of funds on UltimateBet.com. And recently, Clonie Gowen, who ranks number 122 in the Player of the Year listing, is now suing FullTilt for $40 million for her sponsorship of the online poker room after they let her go from the team.
Women in poker have, nonetheless, been very successful at holding their own at the poker tables. They bring that element of sex to the game, which is the number one thing that has any chance of distracting a man from his poker. The truth is, women are very well respected at the tables, and they hold a certain air about them. They make the men behave themselves. Female poker players create a sense of chivalry in poker when they are present. Without the feminine element of poker, poker would not be the game it is today.
