Poker Strategy |
|
|
When it comes to strategy for successful poker playing there are many different schools of thought here. The first thing that needs to be discussed is: are you playing at tournaments or at cash games? Secondly, what size is your bankroll, and can you add to it at any time? Once you have answered those questions it is time to look at the best possible poker strategy for your play.
Whether you are playing at a tournament or cash game one thing is for sure, leave the table with more money than you started with. Now lets discuss some tournament strategy. The strategy for tournament play also has a few variables, are you playing a game that has rebuys or addons? Is this tournament short-handed, heads- up or a standard 9 or 10 man tables depending on the particular game? Is this an online tournament or a live poker tournament?
Let’s say, for now, that we are playing at an online poker tournament with rebuys and addons that cost $5 to get into. And keep in mind that this strategy is for a no limit game. When playing at a low entry tournament that includes the rebuys and addons, play at the beginning of the tournament tends to be quite frantic and it seems that every hand you see at least 3 or 4 players going all in with questionable hands. If you have enough of a bankroll to buy back in 5 times or more than I would certainly suggest that you make these kinds of plays, as the object of this type of game in the first hour is to get as big of a chip stack as possible. If you have a hand that you would typically bet 4x blinds with in a regular non rebuy tournament then by all means go all in, you will either win or lose and if you lose, hit the rebuy button and your back in the game.
Now some players chose not to play that hastily and just sit back and wait for a big hand, which is what I do way to often. I don’t want to waste my money on a 7-8s, but some of my fellow poker friends will play that hand heavily every time.
Once that first crazy hour is over and the addons are finished the play tends to slow down and all in calls aren’t seen as often. At this time it is good to sit back and watch the other players at the table because you really can’t get a good feel for their style during the rebuy or die first hour of play. As the tournament progresses it becomes necessary to increase your aggressiveness or you will end up being blinded out and may miss a money spot. If you are lucky enough to make the final table the play will be even more aggressive. Often times the chip leader will push with marginal hands just to scare off other players. At this point in the game, I will play aggressive with suited connectors, and any pair, and lots of times with any Ace.
That poker strategy holds true for the second and subsequent hours of play in a regular online tournament but the first hour in those games is when you can expect to see folks playing very tight. Once the first hour of play in those games is over, most of the inexperienced or just dumb players have been weeded out and the real game starts.
Live tournament poker strategy is pretty much the same, expect for the fact that you can get a better read on players when you can see their face. I would much rather play in a live tournament than an online tournament for that simple fact.
As for poker strategy in cash games, this is quite different from tournament play. Mainly because not all players at cash games start with the same chip stack, even though there may be a limit to how much you can bring to the table. And players can come and go at any time, some people sit down, clean up and walk away, pissing all the other players at the table off. Cash game poker strategy can also vary quite a bit as to whether you are playing a limit, no limit or fixed game. Read on to see what poker strategy to use for cash games.
